The Northern United States and Cuba share many historical ties. Rum from Cuba was regularly imported into Boston and New York. Many troops from the Northern United States fought heroically in the Spanish American War. Harvard University founded and funded a large cactus preserve near Cienfuegos. Researchers from New York's Rockefeller Institute studied Yellow Fever and developed a successful vaccine in the late 1930s.

Three Northern State Governors (Illinois, North Dakota, and Minnesota) have traveled to Cuba. Once the Embargo is lifted, non-stop flights from Boston, Chicago, St. Louis, New York, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Newark, Detroit, Minneapolis and other large cities to Havana are certain to commence.
